14 trapped in coal mine blast in northwest china

At least 14 people were today trapped after a gas explosion in a coal mine owned by the armed forces in northwest China, an official said.

The incident occured in a coal mine located at Dianchanggou township in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region after a gas explosion shook the mine, leaving 14 people trapped underground, Huang Guoqiang, Deputy Director of the Coal Mine Safety Division of the region said.

The coal mine belonged to the corps, Xinhua news agency reported from Urumqi, the regional capital.

Rescuers were trying to reach the trapped miners, Huang added.

China is the world’s largest coal producer and consumer. However, chinese coal mines are considered the deadliest due to a high rate of accidents.
