80,000 job vacancies seen in mining sector
Canada’s rich mining industry is expected to face a shortage of 80,000 workers over the next decade, Human Resources Minister Monte Solberg said on Wednesday.
“We know that having enough skilled workers is a serious problem,” Solberg said in the prepared text of a speech he was giving to a mining human resources forum.
He said 400,000 Canadians currently have jobs because of the mining sector, which contributes C$40 billion ($41 billion) a year to the economy.
One solution he broached is to help displaced forestry workers transition into the mining industry. Another idea is to make it easier for workers qualified in one province to be able to shift another. And he pushed the idea of hiring more aboriginals, who face a 19 percent jobless rate.
