Anglo shuts coal mines

Anglo American said Tuesday three of its coal mines open coal supply to electricity utility Eskom has closed because of rain.

“They are all closed. They are not in operation at present, “spokesman Pranill Anglo Ramchander said.

Ramchander said he was unsure when Denmark and New Kriel collieries in the province of Mpumalanga and New Vaal in the province of Free State would be returned to service.

All three supply of coal to power stations of Eskom, and none of the coal is for export, he said.

“I can not quantify the amount of coal they produce because they are set up so that transactions by Eskom directly,” he said.

Eskom said Tuesday the utility may have to declare a force majeure if more generators to fail because of bad weather, which was also affecting the coal mines and coal. Wet coal is difficult to handle.
