Arch Coals Skyline mine earns top safety award

St. Louis-based Arch Coal Inc. said Friday that its Skyline mine near Scofield, Carbon County, had the country’s best underground coal mine safety record in 2005, according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The Scofield mine uses longwall and continuous-mining systems. Its employees worked more than 28 months and 500,000 employee-hours without a reportable or lost-time injury, Arch said.

The company received a “Sentinels of Safety” award for the mine in an award program co-sponsored by the MSHA and the National Mining Association.
