Baker Hughes Says Number of Drilling Rigs in Operation Worldwide Totaled 3,135 in March

Baker Hughes Inc., which provides equipment and services to the oil and gas industry, said Monday the number of drilling rigs in operation worldwide in March rose 2 percent from the year-ago period.

The company said 3,135 rigs operated globally in March, up 66 from the 3,069 counted in March 2006.

The international rig count, which excludes rigs in the United States and Canada, was 994 in March, up 96 from the 898 counted in the year-ago period.

The international offshore rig count was 283, up nine from the same period a year ago.

In the United States, the rig count was 1,749 for March, up 198 from the same month last year. The Canadian rig count was 392 in March, down 228 from March 2006.

Baker Hughes shares fell 63 cents to $67.11 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
