Blast at Kazakhstan coal mine kills 18

The head of Mittal Steel in Kazakhstan said on Wednesday 43 miners were missing after a coal mine explosion and a source at the company said 18 bodies had been recovered.

“It is not 43 (dead), 43 are missing. They are missing, the number of dead is much lower. We cannot confirm that all are dead,” Mittal Steel Temirtau CEO Naval Choudhary told Reuters by telephone.

He said he had no accurate death toll as he was waiting for information from the Lenin mine which is near Karaganda in central Kazakhstan.

Separately, a company source who spoke on condition of anonymity said that 18 dead bodies had been recovered and “about 40″ miners were still unaccounted for.
