Mining communities from all over the north-east of England gathered in Durham on Saturday for the city’s 122nd Durham Miners’ Gala. About 50,000 people were at the city’s former racecourse to see the traditional parade of more than 100 elaborate mining banners.

Altona Resources is conducting a feasibility study of the Wintinna coal deposit north of Coober Pedy. The company hopes to begin construction on a mine and power station within 18 months.
