DEQ Extends Review Of Kennecott Mine

The DEQ is extending its review period for the proposed Kennecott nickel and copper mine in the Yellow Dog Plains of Marquette County. The new deadline is January 9.

The DEQ is reviewing Kennecott’s 700-page response it submitted regarding 91 deficiencies the agency found in the company’s application. It’s also allowing the public to send in comments through December 26.

“We’re interested in making sure the DEQ does a thorough review and that the public has an opportunity to review the responses we’ve submitted,” said Jon Cherry, Kennecott’s manager for the project. “Not only is it a good thing for the company to have a good, strong project, but it’s also important for the public and the DEQ to make sure that things are being done properly.”

The mine proposal has attracted opposition from environmentalists who believe the mine might jeopardize the pristine Yellow Dog Plains.
