Feasibility study finished for clean coal project

Work on a new clean coal project in central Queensland could start within two years, now that a feasibility study has been completed.

Under the world first technology, waste carbon dioxide from the power production process would be pumped underground around Emerald and Springsure.

Stanwell operations director John McGarry says the process will also produce water as a by-product.

“The gasification side produces the syn-gas, we call it synthetic gas itself, which has got the two components, carbon dioxide, but the other one is hydrogen,” he said.

“We will send the hydrogen to a turbine and the waste product is water. We take the CO2 off, we sequester it, bury it. The other ingredient is hydrogen and its waste product is water, that’s the lovely part about this.”
