Jackson Mine area reopens for recreational use

Sunday, August 13th 2006

A historic ribbon-cutting ceremony was held July 8 in Negaunee to reopen the former Jackson Iron Mine area. From left are Negaunee Council members Peter Dompierre, Kimme Peterson and Tom Stanaway; state Rep. Stephen Adamini; Tom Baldini, district administrator for U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak; Negaunee Mayor Paul Gravedoni; City Manager Gerald Peterson; and City Council members Dave Johnson, Jim Wickstrom; and Jim Thomas. After decades of private ownership, the city of Negaunee has approved a Land Reuse Plan for the property and invites the community to explore the area and provide input. Miles of fencing have been taken down and signs erected indicating the old street names, previous property owner names, the Twin City Hospital location, the first state police post, the approximate location of where the tree stump with iron ore was discovered, and the Jackson Mine pits. The Land Reuse Plan contains opportunities for public recreation and trail development, historic preservation and interpretation, heritage tourism, along with economic development activities. The city council and staff are inviting residents for a yearlong discussion on possible reuses and their collective vision.
