New World Mining update on Wednesday

The public is invited to attend the annual technical meeting for the New World Mining District Response and Restoration Project.

The meeting is Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Madison Room at the Comfort Inn at 1370 N. 7th Ave. in Bozeman.

Agenda items include a discussion of completed 2006 projects and upcoming work outlined in the 2007-08 annual work plan.

Individuals from the Forest Service and Maxim Technologies will make presentations and answer questions about several topics, including the results of water quality and the recently released Draft Adit Discharge Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis.

Copies of the agenda can be obtained by calling Mary Beth Marks at 406-587- 6709.

The New World Mining District, which includes a mixture of National Forest and private lands near Cooke City, is a historic metals mining district.

The federal government signed a settlement agreement with Crown Butte Mining Inc. to purchase the company’s interest in their holdings in 1996.

The transfer of property to the U.S. resulted in the establishment of a $22.5 million fund to clean up historic mining impacts to specific properties in the mining district.
