Oil & gas tops all-quarter chart in 2006

The BSE Oil & Gas index was the sole gainer in all the four quarters of calendar 2006. The index gained 40.11 per cent to close at 6179.6 over a year-ago level of 410.64.

The Capital Goods index turned out to be the largest gainer with annual returns of 56.43 per cent. The 30-scrip Sensex was the second-biggest gainer, up 46.70 per cent, while the IT index ranked third with a yearly return of 40.87 per cent.

The BSE Bankex and Metal index gained over 39 per cent each, while the BSE-500 index appreciated 38.9 per cent. The BSE Mid-cap index shot up 31.1 per cent, while the Small-cap index clocked a modest gain of 15.97 per cent.

The Consumer Durables index underperformed, rising a modest 9.27 per cent. The index for public sector undertakings (PSUs) logged a double-digit growth of 11.9 per cent. BSE Healthcare (up 21.74 per cent) index and BSE FMCG index (up 17.40 per cent) were major underperformers in calendar 2006.

The Capital Goods index emerged the best performer in the first quarter (January-March) of 2006, surging 40.60 per cent. The Metal index ran next with a gain of 36.8 per cent, while the FMCG index, appreciating 34.26 per cent, became the third-largest gainer. The Consumer Durables index underperformed with a negative return of 1.80 per cent, while Bankex posted a meagre gain of 3.61 per cent.

The second (April-June) quarter of 2006 remained turned out to be the worst for equity investors with 11 BSE indices having lost over 10 per cent. Indices such as PSU (down 19 per cent), healthcare (-18.8 per cent), small-cap (-18.7 per cent) and mid-cap (-18.1 per cent) lost heavily in the second quarter of 2006.

Led by the banking sector (Bankex up 38.9 per cent), the market staged a smart rebound during the third (July- September) quarter of 2006. As many as 11 indices, including the Sensex, PSU index, mid-cap index and small-cap index, registered double-digit gains. Metal index underperformed, rising only 0.64 per cent.

The IT index emerged the largest gainer in the fourth (October-December) quarter 2006, up 20.1 per cent.

The Bankex, Consumer Durables, Mid-cap, Small-cap and Mid-cap indices clocked healthy returns between 12 and 17 per cent. FMCG was the only index that declined in the fourth quarter. Healthcare, automobile and PSU faired badly, rising around 2 per cent each.
