Oil lobbyists demonstrate new drilling techniques

The nation’s most powerful oil industry lobbying group demonstrates new drilling technology in the Capitol today at a time when lawmakers are debating Florida’s response to global warming.

The American Petroleum Institute demonstrates its latest technology, including directional drilling and deepwater drilling ships, on the 22nd floor of the Capitol at 11 a.m.

The display, which lasts until 5 p.m., will be presided over by API senior economist Sara Banaszak, according to a written release.

The Florida Petroleum Council, API’s Florida affiliate, has been fighting efforts by some lawmakers to enshrine a drilling ban in the state constitution that would keep drilling platforms at least 250 miles off of Florida’s coast.

The measure is largely symbolic and would require the cooperation of the federal government, which has jurisdiction over territorial waters that far from shore.
