Qld Resources Council welcomes review of mine safety report

The Queensland Resources Council has welcomed spot safety audits and an independent review of a State Government report into safety incidents at mine sites.

The crackdown comes after Queensland recorded its fourth mine fatality in the past 10 months.

Council chief executive Michael Roche says he is surprised that interim findings have raised safety concerns.

He says companies and unions record safety incidents differently.

“There’s been some scurrilous accusations made by the unions that the safety statistics reporting by companies is inaccurate or in fact been rorted,” he said.

“I wrote to the Minister to say that we supported a review but also [called] on the Minister to institute a whole new way of reporting safety statistics so there can be no accusations of rorting.”
