Russia: Sensor Disabled Before Mine Blast

A disregard for safety in the interest of profit very likely caused the explosion in a Siberian mine last month that killed 108 people, the biggest mine disaster in Russia’s recent history, officials said. They said that the mine’s management deliberately disabled a methane detector, among other safety violations. A buildup of methane, sparked by a short circuit, caused the blast. The governor of the Kemerovo region, Aman-Geldi M. Tuleyev, said the managers defied safety regulations to increase production.
