South Africa Iron ore exports up 16%

South Africa exported 30.336-million tons of iron ore in 2007, which represents an increase of 16 percent year- on-year.

According to Yieh Corp, which is affiliated with Taiwan’s biggest privately owned steel group the E-United Group, 2007′s figures were 4.175-million tons up on the 26.161-million tons exported by South Africa in 2006.

The bulk of the imports went to China, which received 11.772-million tons or 38.8 percent of South Africa’s total iron ore export tonnage.

Imports to China increased by 8.2 percent in 2007.

Japan imported 6.57-million tons of iron ore from South Africa, accounting for 21.7 percent of the total export tonnage.

Tonnages to Japan increased by 33.7 percent during the year.

Imports to Germany, the third-largest export destination for South African iron ore, climbed 54.8 percent to 5.658-million tons or 18.7 percent of the total.
