South Dakota Water Management Board Approves Rules For Uranium Mining

The South Dakota Water Management Board has approved new rules for injection wells for uranium mining operations proposed for the Black Hills region.

The water board approved the rules Thursday after listing to public testimony the previous day.

State environmental officials say it will be at least two years before any mining begins.

The rules agreed upon Thursday and a similar set before the state Board of Minerals and Environment must still be reviewed by a legislative committee and checked by the South Dakota Secretary of State.

Mining companies would also have to apply for permits from both the water board and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
