Suncor Energy To Start Sarnia Shutdown-Related Work Saturday

Suncor Energy Products Inc. will begin preliminary work for a planned maintenance shutdown at its Sarnia, Ont. refinery on Saturday.

The Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) unit said the preliminary work involves the shutdown and securing of portions of the facility in advance of the shutdown, which is scheduled to begin in stages beginning the following week. Parts of the plant will remain in operation and the company will continue to produce fuel throughout the shutdown, although at reduced rates.

In addition to routine maintenance during the shutdown, various modifications to the facility will be undertaken as part of plans to further integrate the refinery with the company’s oil-sands operations. When complete in 2007, these modifications are expected to allow the facility to process up to 40,000 barrels a day of oil-sands sour crude, it said.

The maintenance and modification activities, including preparations, are expected to take about eight weeks to complete.

Suncor Energy Inc. of Calgary is an integrated oil and gas company.
