Washington Group to Provide Construction Services for N.M. Uranium Enrichment Plant

Washington Group International Inc. said Monday it received a contract from Louisiana Energy Services to provide construction management services for a uranium enrichment facility in Eunice, New Mexico.

Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

The company said the National Enrichment Facility will provide the country with an alternative domestic source of the enriched uranium required to operate U.S. commercial nuclear power plants.

Washington Group’s Rust Constructors unit will execute the construction management services on a merit shop basis.

Most low-enriched uranium essential for fueling commercial power plants is produced abroad, and the new NEF will help provide a reliable sustainable domestic supply of the material. When the NEF is operating at full capacity, it will produce enough material to meet about one-fourth of the current U.S. enrichment services demand.

The NEF will provide more than 200 permanent jobs and more than 400 multi-year construction jobs in southeast New Mexico. Preconstruction activities have begun, and the project is scheduled to be complete in 2009.

Washington Group shares rose 3 pennies to $51.60 in morning trading on the Nasdaq. –(AP)
