World Oil Awards Winners Announced

World Oil® magazine announced the thirteen winners of the 2008 World Oil Awards at the seventh annual black-tie gala dinner last night in Houston, Texas. The event, attended by close to 350 industry leaders, benefited two universities that offer programs leading to careers in the petroleum industry.

Frank Springett of National Oilwell Varco won the inaugural Next Generation Committee Award for his forward thinking and his involvement in the future of the industry. Schlumberger and Tesco were recognized in the Best Drilling Technology award for their New Directional Casing while Drilling Technique which allows more efficient deployment and retrieval of bottom-hole assemblies used in Directional Casing while Drilling. Halliburton was institutional in their award for Best Fluids which was the OmegaFrac(SM) Fracturing Service which uses as a carrier fluid a biopolymer-based, linear (no crosslink required) fluid system that eliminates the need for hydrocarbon-based concentrates. Weatherford took home the Best Well Intervention award for their Motorized Cutting Tool (MCT), a non-explosive pipe cutter for safe, efficient pipe recovery. Pipe recovery is extremely important in modern well intervention programs known as the Motorized Cutting Tool. Shell International Exploration and Production was awarded the Innovative Thinkers Award for pioneering production technologies, which helps harness the energy the world needs, from ever more extreme environments through their Shell Deepwater Team.

Best Fluids Award: OmegaFrac(SM) Fracturing Service, Halliburton 7. Health Safety Environment / Sustainable Development Award: David Burnett, Texas A&M, GPRI Department of Petroleum Engineering 8. Innovative Thinkers Award: Shell Deepwater Team, Shell International Exploration and Production 9. New Horizons Idea Award: Resbots, Saudi Aramco EXPEC Advanced Research Center 10. Next Generation Award: Frank B. Springett, National Oilwell Varco 11. Best Outreach Program Award: Erin Thomson (Educational Advocacy (EA) Program), American Petroleum Institute 12. Best Production Technology Award: MICRO-CURE Cased-Hole Remediation System, Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids

13. Best Well Intervention Award: Motorized Cutting Tool (MCT), Weatherford International Ltd.

The 2008 World Oil Awards benefited Penn State University and Texas Tech University and Petroleum Economist donated the 2007 World Energy Atlas to these programs as well. This program garnered hundreds of submissions from points around the globe. A third-party Advisory Board, comprised of 14 senior industry executives and academics and The Next Generation Committee, comprised of 20 up-and-coming leaders in the petroleum industry, all of which judged the short list of nominees.
