170 miners evacuated over underground mine fire in Donetsk region

All mining operations were suspended at a mine in Gorlovka over an underground fire on Thursday.

As many as 170 miners were evacuated urgently from the mine, no one of them was injured, the central headquarters of the state military mountain rescue service of the Ukrainian Coalmining Ministry said.

Six rescue teams arrived to the mine to examine it in emergency and found out that carbon oxide emissions occurred at the junction of one working shaft and the earlier isolated shaft.

The situation in the emergency mine has deteriorated by Thursday morning. The shaft was fully screened with smoke, the air temperature increased to 29 degrees Celsius above zero. Specialists are very concerned over the growing methane concentration that has already reached two percent.
