3 firms to develop efficient propylene production system in Chiba

Three Japanese chemical firms said Thursday they have launched a 10 billion yen joint project to develop an efficient propylene production system using butane-butene fractions generated at their plants in Chiba Prefecture.

Idemitsu Kosan Co., Sumitomo Chemical Co. and Mitsui Chemicals Inc. said they should enhance cooperation to survive competition from large oil refineries and petrochemical complexes in the Middle East and China amid oil price hikes.

The three firms have oil refining and petrochemical plants at an industrial complex on the Tokyo Bay coast of the prefecture.

They said they will take advantage of their plants’ close locations to efficiently gather and enrich butane-butene fractions for conversion into propylene.

The system with a propylene production capacity of 150,000 tons a year is planned to start demonstration tests in fiscal 2009.
