Alternative energy growing in Mich., coal still king

Michigan is exploring ways to continue growing its alternative energy industry and providing a boost to economic development, but coal-fired power plants are expected to continue producing most of the state’s electricity through at least 2030.

ENERGY PLAN: Gov. Jennifer Granholm issued an executive directive in April calling for the development of a comprehensive plan to help ensure that the state’s future electric power needs are met.

WINDS OF CHANGE: There is likely enough potential wind energy over Lake Michigan that it could, if harnessed, meet the entire state’s electricity needs.
