Archipelago Resources to develop Vietnam chromite mine

British-based Archipelago Resources plans to establish a joint venture with state-run Vietnamese miner Vinacomin to develop a chromite mine, the government said.

It said in a directive seen on Monday the joint venture would mine chromite, a mineral that is a major ore source for chromium, at a 16.6 sq km mine in the northern province of Thanh Hoa.

The chromite would be used exclusively for local production of ferro chrome, the directive said without giving details of the value of the investment.

The government also allowed the venture to explore for chromite in nearby mines in Thanh Hoa, it said.
