Australia Energy Consumption To Rise Nearly 50% In 25 Yrs

Australia’s domestic energy consumption is expected to rise nearly 50% from 2004-05 levels over the next 25 years, a government forecaster said Thursday.

The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics forecast growth in Australian energy consumption to moderate from earlier growth trends, averaging 1.6% a year to 2030.

ABARE’s national and state projections 2029-30 report said the slower growth reflected structural changes in the economy, energy conservation measures and rising oil prices.

“Australia is expected to meet its requirements for energy through a combination of coal, oil, gas and renewables,” said ABARE Executive Director Phillip Glyde.

“The most significant change in fuel shares over the period to 2029-30 is likely to be an increase in the share of gas as it becomes a more widely used fuel for generating electricity.”

Electricity generation is expected to rise by an average 1.9% a year to reach 408 terawatt hours by 2029-30.
