Bessemer-area coal mine reopens

A coal mine has reopened in Jefferson County after being shut down for five months to undergo renovations and its new owners expect to produce 200,000 tons a year.

Headwaters Inc., owner of Covol Engineered Fuels LC, has completed work at the Jim Walter Resources Mine No. 3 in Adger, located just outside of Bessemer. Headwaters (NYSE:HW – News) acquired Covol in May 2006 and closed the facility in November to build a new plant with improved recovery abilities.

The coal will be marketed for steam production in utility and industrial boilers. In a news release, Covol said it anticipates building two additional facilities in Alabama this year.
