Canada Opening ‘Car Heaven’ Gates for Junkers
Canada will start a program to give drivers incentives get older vehicles off the roads.
The government will give the Toronto-based Clean Air Foundation $92 million over four years to run a national vehicle “scrappage” program. It will offer rebates on new vehicles, free transit passes, bicycles, membership in ride-sharing programs and cash. Old clunkers will be turned over to scrapyards to crush and recycle.
Vehicles earlier than the 1996 model year will qualify for the Clean Air Foundation’s “Car Heaven” program, which should be up and running by January.
