Debswana Selects Gemcom Mining Platform for its Orapa Operation

Gemcom Software International , a global provider of mining software and service solutions, today announced that it has completed a R4.5 million (approximately CAD $680,000) deal with Debswana’s Orapa operation for the implementation of Gemcom’s collaborative GEMS platform.

“Several years ago, we worked with Debswana’s Jwaneng operation to help them improve efficiency at the mine site by enabling timely, accurate information to be exchanged between interdependent functions such as geology, planning, surveying and scheduling,” commented Warren Johnstone, Managing Director of Gemcom’s African operations. “Working together with Debswana, we established best practice workflows between these functions, which Gemcom enabled by tailoring a mining platform to meet the operation’s business goals and mining challenges.”

Debswana is looking to replicate the success of the Jwaneng operation by engaging Gemcom again at Orapa. “Every mining operation faces unique challenges because of the unique nature of the deposit it is seeking to extract. By working with Gemcom, we have gained the capability to make more informed decisions because of the on-demand availability of quality data. One of the key drivers behind our decision to partner with the company again was the significant value-add we have realised,” said Polite Khutjwe, Mineral Resources Manager at Orapa and Letlhakane Mines.

Commenting on the important role partnership plays in its solutions, Gemcom’s President and CEO, Rick Moignard, stated: “To add optimal value to a business, it’s necessary to work very closely with a client. You have to understand their goals, the constraints they face and how they are working today before you, along with the client, can define and implement an effective solution.”

Gemcom’s solutions incorporate mining, business and IT expertise, which are reflected in best practices and a mining platform tailored to support each client’s needs. This approach allows mining professionals to select applications that support specific mining processes, while giving them the opportunity to plug into a larger framework that will enable them to participate in optimising the entire mining value chain.
