Dollar Up, Gold Down in Europe

The U.S. dollar rose against other major currencies in European trading Wednesday. Gold fell.

The euro closed at $1.3199, down from $1.3247 late Tuesday in New York. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.3212.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Tuesday, included 118.72 Japanese yen, up from 117.92; 1.2228 Swiss francs, up from 1.2173; and 1.1730 Canadian dollars, up from 1.1668.

The British pound closed at $1.9589, down from $1.9621.

In midday New York trading, the dollar bought 118.62 yen and 1.2209 Swiss francs, while the pound was worth $1.9599.

Gold closed in London at $$668.80 per troy ounce, down from $680.60 late Tuesday. In Zurich, gold closed at $662.75, down from $675.70. Gold fell $12.50 in Hong Kong to close at $673.10 an ounce.

Silver closed in London at $14.09 per troy ounce, down from $14.53.
