Flood in China iron mine traps 28

A flood inside an iron mine in northern China trapped 28 miners, official media reported on Wednesday.

There was no immediate word on the fate of those trapped in the incident, which occurred early on Wednesday near the city of Baotou in the sprawling Inner Mongolia Region.

Rescue efforts were under way, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

The report did not mention the cause of the flood in the Haolaigou Iron Ore Mine.

Most such incidents occur when miners break through into underground rivers or abandoned shafts that have since filled with water.

Along with explosions and fires, such accidents are a leading cause of death in China’s notoriously dangerous mines, where mishaps killed 4,746 people last year.

Most accidents are attributable to lax safety measures.
