Fluor lands coal plant contract

Fluor Corp. has received a contract to build a new coal plant for TXU Corp.

Irving-based Fluor (NYSE: FLR – News) said it would begin work on phase one of the project immediately and will book this initial portion of the project in the second-quarter of 2006.

The engineering services firm said it would provide engineering, procurement and construction services for two new units as part of the Oak Grove power plant project.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fluor said the project would create about 2,500 construction jobs to the region.

Dallas-based TXU (NYSE: TXU – News) announced in April a plan to spend $10 billion to build 11 coal-fired power plants in Texas.

The Oak Grove plant will be constructed at the site of a previously planned power plant that has significant infrastructure already in place. Both units of the plant are expected to be mostly completed in 2009. The plants are expected to be able to power 1 million homes.
