Fossil, Gem and Mineral Show returns to Prairie State

An eye-popping collection of jewelry, crystals and fluorescent stones will be on display and for sale at Prairie State College’s annual Fossil, Gem and Mineral Show this weekend.

The free family event is hosted by PSC’s Department of Natural Sciences and the South Suburban Earth Science Club. It also includes special children’s activities and peering at the sun through a filtered telescope (weather permitting).

In addition to a display of fossils, shells and minerals for viewing, dealers will sell items such as jewelry, gem trees, opals, geodes, amethysts, crystals and fluorescent stones.

The exhibitors have an amazing selection of gems, minerals and fossils, Lee Anne Burrough, assistant professor of earth science at PSC, said in a press release.

Participants can view science demonstrations to learn about biology, chemistry, geology and physics. Scouts can earn their geology badge.

”It’s a wonderful way to spend the afternoon with the family because there’s something for everyone,” said Marilyn Quas, former professor of physical science at PSC. ”You can learn about science and get a jump on holiday shopping. You’ll find gifts that you won’t find anywhere else.”
