Industry Stakeholders prepare for the Joint Technology Initiative on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells

On 29 June 2006, the 59 companies and other takeholders interested to become shareholders of the Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) on Hydrogen and Fuel Cell met to discuss the modalities of industry’s participation in this Public Private Partnership proposed by the European Commission in September 2005.

During the meeting, industry stakeholders reached a number of decisions on the organisation of their participation in the JTI, based on the recommendations of a dedicated Working Group within the European Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Platform (HFP). This Group has developed a possible structure for the Joint Technology Initiative over the past months, which is contained in a working document “Aspects of a possible JTI ”“ An industry view” (available at http://www.hfpeurope.org/).

Industry stakeholders notably decided that during the coming months, they would create an association, probably in the form of a Belgian International Not for Profit Association, of which all interested industry stakeholders will become Members. This association will then become the industrial partner of the European Commission for the constitution of the JTI, in order to ensure that industry speaks with one voice within the Public Private Partnership.

The achievements of the Working Group as well as the numerous discussions and decisions on industry’s participation in the JTI show that industrial stakeholders are committed and have so far well progressed in the preparation of the Public Private Partnership.
These stakeholders now call upon the European Commission to match industry’s efforts and ambitions by adopting as soon as possible the Proposal for a Regulation to create the JTI, so that it can start operating in the first half of 2007, at the beginning of the operation period of the Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7).
