Intermap Technologies Introduces New Malaysia Mapping Program

Monday, August 18th 2008

Intermap Technologies today announced that the Company has entered into a new distribution program with the Sabah Lands and Surveys Department in East Malaysia. The program, called Digital Sabah, will make available high-resolution 3D digital elevation data and imagery covering the entire State of Sabah.

Sabah, located on the Island of Borneo and the Malaysia Borneon state, encompasses one of the worlds few remaining rain forests, boasting wild elephants, orangutans, and other endangered species. Available now, the high-resolution data will be used to enable the State of Sabah to manage environmentally sensitive areas using Intermap’s highly accurate imagery and elevation data. Expected uses are geospatial applications within the environment, hydrology, forestry, plantation, and mining sectors.

“Digital Sabah is the first ever complete high-resolution digital dataset of Sabah,” said Datuk Osman, Director of the Sabah Department of Lands and Surveys. “The Digital Sabah Program involves a public-private partnership that is a business model for future commercial and government partnerships. Digital Sabah will help the State of Sabah and Lands and Surveys Department in managing the Mount Kinabalu World Heritage Site and sustaining environmentally conscious development programs, like the Sabah Development Corridor, moving forward while protecting our coastal regions and virgin rain forests.”

Included in the precision datasets are digital surface models depicting the earth’s surface (including cultural features such as vegetation, buildings, and roads), digital terrain models displaying the bare earth (with all cultural features digitally removed), and orthorectified radar images (grayscale images that accentuate topographic features).

“Having high-quality elevation data in the early planning stage for major development programs is crucial for responsible decision making when developing one of the few remaining rain forests on this planet,” said David Hisdal, Director of Sales SE Asia & Australia for Intermap Technologies. “We are proud to be able to supply such important data to a government agency that clearly recognizes the significance of planning to protect this valuable habitat for future generations.”
