Labor urges protection of Kokoda Track from mining

Thursday, August 10th 2006

The Federal Opposition has called for the Government to ensure the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is protected from mining.

An Australian mining company has acquired the rights to a gold and copper deposit near the track.

Labor’s Kevin Rudd, Simon Crean and Alan Griffin have introduced a motion in federal Parliament urging the Government to work with PNG authorities to protect the area.

The Kokoda Track was the scene of a series of major engagements between Australian and Japanese troops in World War II.
