Lea County OKs incentives for possible uranium enrichment factory

Lea County Commissioners have approved economic incentives for a company that is considering building a $2 billion uranium enrichment factory in southern New Mexico.

Local officials hope the incentives will help them as they prepare to make a final pitch next week to Areva Inc. Areva Inc., a subsidiary of Paris-based Areva, also is mulling possible sites in Idaho, Ohio, Texas and Washington state.

The Economic Development Corporation of Lea County presented a proposal to the commission yesterday that mirrored tax breaks afforded to Louisiana Energy Services, another company that is already building an enrichment plant near Eunice.

During the meeting, economic development officials told the commission about the benefits of having Areva Inc. pick Lea County as the site for its plant.
