MetaCarta Signs a Contract With the Society of Petroleum Engineers to Offer Geographic Search of the Organizations Technical eLibrary

MetaCarta®, Inc., the leading provider of geographic intelligence solutions, today announced that the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is using MetaCarta’s geOdrive solution to provide map-based search of the organization’s eLibrary.

SPE is a not-for-profit professional association whose members are engaged in energy resources development and production. Serving more than 69,000 members from 112 countries worldwide, SPE provides services through its publications, conferences, workshops and forums. SPE’s eLibrary, which can be found on its website (www.spe.org), is a collection of more than 42,000 downloadable technical papers and is considered a key resource for technical knowledge related to oil and gas exploration and production. For the first time, industry professionals can search and categorize data found in unstructured technical documents by geography, and visualize the results on a map.

“The largest companies in the oil and gas industry rely on the SPE eLibrary to help their employees find the research they need, and so we are delighted to announce this latest addition to our resource,” said Robert Wyatt, SPE Director of Information Technology. “We are dedicated to providing our users with a search engine that is optimized for research, and we believe that with the help of MetaCarta’s technology, we are offering them a valuable tool that will not only enable them to search unstructured data and give it geographic relevance, but to do it quickly and efficiently.”

MetaCarta geOdrive combines MetaCarta Geographic Text Search (GTS) with a Geographic Data Module (GDM) specific to the energy industry to offer a complete and robust solution. MetaCarta GTS is a comprehensive geographic search solution that enables users to rapidly locate high-relevance documents by combining text search with geographic and temporal factors. MetaCarta GDMs are industry-specific knowledge bases utilized to identify and disambiguate geographic references, assign latitude/longitude coordinates, and rank.

“MetaCarta has a proven track record of providing geographic intelligence solutions to large companies in the oil and gas industry, and we are thrilled to now offer the same solutions to individuals working in the field through our relationship with the SPE,” said Mike O’Dell, Vice President and General Manager, Energy Division of MetaCarta.
