A part of the mining belt system at the first mine of Neyveli Lignite Corporation was completely damaged in a fire last night, affecting production, a company official said.

More than 120 metres of the mining belt system were damaged. Fire tenders fought the blaze for an hour and doused it. The loss is estimated at rs 12 lakh, NLC deputy engineer (first mine) V Shanmugham told PTI.

No casualties were reported, he said.

NLC has three lignite mines and operates three thermal stations. In the first mine, about 6.5 million tonnes are excavated per Annum. The excavated lignite is carried from the mine to the storing point by means of conveyor belts.
