Norilsk Nickel shareholder urges talks with UC RUSAL

Head of Interros and one of the main shareholders of Norilsk Nickel Vladimir Potanin has recommended the managers of the Russian mining and metallurgical company to launch a new round of talks with UC RUSAL on the divestment of energy assets into an independent company, the Russian businessman told journalists today. Potanin noted that he had already discussed the matter with UC RUSAL’s co-owner Oleg Deripaska and commissioned Norilsk Nickel’s General Director Denis Morozov to hold talks with the shareholders.

As reported earlier, in December 2007 the shareholders of Norilsk Nickel did not support the divestment of energy assets from the company and the Board of Directors approved in February the sale of non-core energy assets. Norilsk Nickel confirmed this decision to RBC today. However, the decision was made before UC RUSAL purchased a 25-percent stake plus one share in the company from Mikhail Prokhorov’s Onexim Group.
