Oxiana mine a boon for near-by towns

Oxiana’s Prominent Hill gold and copper mine looks set to create a surge in business for airports and petrol stations in Coober Pedy, Port Augusta and other regional centres in South Australia.

The company says it could have up to 300 people working at the mine by the end of the year, but it will not be building a town.

Oxiana managing director Owen Hegarty says the company is only providing basic accommodation, and envisages its permanent staff will live in other centres and travel to the mine.

“We’ll basically be a drive in, drive out, or fly, in fly out [place] whether it’s Coober Pedy or Adelaide, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, because that’s where we expect our people … to reside,” he said.
