Shifting Gold Prices Puts Mothers Day Shoppers On Edge

The fluctuating price of gold may be giving Mother’s Day shoppers a little anxiety.

Gold had been trading at more than $950 an ounce at one point last month, but it has been sliding lately.

At Safian and Rudolph Jewelers on Jewelers Row in Philadelphia, manager Michael Gilman admits that’s been having an impact:

“Gold prices have slowed down, I think jewelry purchases a little bit. We’re still doing a lot of bridal and I mean silver jewelry, some people are buying because gold is a little bit higher.”

Gilman says there are options if you’re put off by the gold price:

“There are alternative metals or maybe go to a bracelet instead of a necklace or maybe go to a ring, something like that.”

But for Amanda, of Reading, who was window shopping while in Philadelphia for a conference, there is no substitute:

“I would definitely stick with gold, I’m definitely a gold girl, yes.”
