Steelworkers cancel strike threat at Century Aluminum

Wednesday, August 2nd 2006

Century Aluminum Co. and the United Steelworkers said Tuesday they reached a tentative agreement on a restructured last, best and final offer.

Monterey-based Century had announced plans Monday to close its Ravenswood, W.Va., facility in the wake of a 72-hour strike notice from the union.

The company had said the action could put the future of the West Virginia operation in jeopardy.

The union said Tuesday it canceled the 72-hour notice to strike and will extend the current labor contract to permit a ratification vote on the tentative agreement later this week.

Century Aluminum Co., the parent of Century Aluminum of West Virginia, owns primary aluminum capacity in the United States and Iceland, as well as an ownership stake in alumina and bauxite assets in the United States and Jamaica.
