Defenders of the Black Hills of Rapid City will host a two-day uranium summit on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 17-18 in the Slim Buttes area of Harding County. The land treaty and environmental group invites the public to attend and bring camping equipment.

The summit includes forums and a tour of an open-pit uranium mine, which was prospected and abandoned nearly 40 years ago. Campsites are available. Meals will be provided. Participants are asked to bring water. No water is available at campsites.

Summit topics will include a new sediment study of Cave Hills uranium mines; a South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources water study, geology, prospecting uranium at Slim Buttes and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Super Fund.
