US Rig Activity Picks Up

The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas this week in the U.S. rose by 27 from last week.

Of the 1,889 rigs running nationwide, 1,493 explore for natural gas and 386 for oil, according to a report Friday from Baker Hughes Inc., which tracks rig operations worldwide. Ten are listed as miscellaneous.

A year ago, the rig count stood at 1,760.

This week 67 rigs operated offshore — most of them in the Gulf of Mexico. That is down two from last week and 13 fewer than a year ago.

In Canada 152 rigs are running — up 20 from the week before and 38 more than a year ago.
