Vietnam to exploit 37 million tonnes of coal this year

The Vietnam Coal and Minerals Industrial Group has announced a target of 37 million tonnes of coal in 2007.

The group will pour more investment in increasing the capacity of coal mines and factories as well as speeding up the construction of such projects as Son Dong and Cam Pha electric power plants, Bao Lam bauxite mine and Nhan Co project.

Last year, the group produced and sold 36.85 million tonnes of coal, equivalent to 119% of the year’s targeted figure and up 22% against 2005. Of this, over 21 million tonnes of coal were exported, up 44.6% compared to 2005’s figure. The sector’s total earning last year reached VND 27,500 billion, up 20.6% against the previous year.
