WA Govt to build fourth iron ore port

The West Australian Government is to build a fourth iron ore port in the Pilbara to cope with future export demands.

WA exports around 240 million tonnes of iron ore each year and this is expected to double in the next decade.

The preferred location for the port is Ronson Island, about 80 kilometres west of Port Hedland.

The Planning and Infrastructure Minister, Alannah Mactiernan, says the new port will have a greater capacity than Western Australia’s three existing ports to cope with projected demand.

“We’ve got tremendous growth going on in the Pilbara and we have every reason to believe that this will be sustained,” she said.

Ms Mactiernan says the new port could produce up to 500 million tonnes of iron ore each year.
