Widow of coal miner wont be intimidated

The wife of a Kentucky coal miner killed in an accident last year says she has been receiving threatening phone calls since speaking out for mine safety.

Melissa Lee, whose husband Jimmy died in a methane gas explosion in a Harlan County mine, says unidentified callers have told her she needs to shut up and threatened her children, CBS reports.

Lee has been making appearances along with the widows of other coal miners to support a state mine safety bill initiated in response to mining accidents in Eastern Kentucky.

“There’s too many people still here in Harlan County who have husbands underground,” Lee said. “And if me speaking out keeps their sons safe, their grandsons safe, their sons-in-law safe, then I’ve done something good. My husband’s death wasn’t in vain.”

Lee made the comments in an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes,” which is scheduled to be broadcast Sunday.
