Xstrata Says It Reaches Labor Deal With Sudbury Nickel Workers

Xstrata Plc, the world’s fourth- largest nickel producer, said the company reached a “tentative” agreement with a union representing about 200 employees in Sudbury, Ontario, over a labor contract.

The United Steelworkers union Local 2020′s bargaining team unanimously recommended details of a new accord to the office, clerical and technical employees at the nickel operations in Sudbury, Zug, Switzerland-based Xstrata said today in a statement distributed via Market Wire. The agreement needs a ratification vote. The existing contract was due to expire today.

Eighty-seven percent of Sudbury workers represented by the Canadian Auto Workers voted in favor of a new three-year labor contract that included wage increases, Xstrata said Feb. 5. The agreement helped Xstrata avoid a strike. CAW workers went on strike at Sudbury for three weeks in 1997, seven months in 2000 and 2001, and three weeks in 2004.
