ASRC contract outlines coal exploration

Arctic Slope Regional Corporation has granted a global resources company exclusive rights to explore and possibly develop the Native corporation’s coal fields. BHP Billiton is set to begin exploration this year for Barrow-based ASRC.
Billiton also will continue ASRC’s environmental studies and set up a process for consulting with local communities. ASRC has long known about the low-sulfur bituminous coal on its land in Northwest Alaska. The coal, however, hasn’t been developed, in part because of its long distance from markets.
