Massey Energys Superior Surface Mine Wins National Competition Sponsored by U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement

Massey Energy’s Superior Surface Mine was given a National Award for Excellence in Surface Mining by the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) at the MINExpo 2008 sponsored by the National Mining Association in Las Vegas, NV.

Located in Logan County, WV, Superior was given one of four national awards for excellence in surface mining in OSM’s annual competition.

In granting the awards, OSM Director Brent Wahlquist said, “These awards recognize the highest achievements in innovative techniques, reforestation, preparing mined land for long term agricultural use and building enduring community infrastructure.”

“All of us at Massey congratulate the men and women at Superior Surface Mine for receiving this national award from OSM,” said Don L. Blankenship, Chairman and CEO. “Their innovative engineering at the surface mine demonstrates the commitment, technology and expertise every member brings to our mines in Appalachia. We are proud that their work has been recognized with this award.”
